Should You Include Keywords in a Web Page's Title?

On-site SEO involves inserting viable keywords into a website's content so that the crawlers employed by search engines can pick up on them and potentially grant that website a high ranking in SERPs generated for users searching for terms that include those keywords. Search engines often conflate keywords that are present in the pages' titles with keywords located within the content while going through the automated process that determines how highly those pages should rank.

Even though the meta tags within the HTML syntax of a page should include a list of keywords that help guide search engines' efforts to work out what they should use when assigning that page a ranking, it helps the page's SEO in its own way if its publicly displayed title also includes terms with keyword value.

However, the SEO-related need for a web page's title to include keywords conflicts with the readability-related need for the title to remain concise. This is a particular problem for online storefronts that dedicate a separate page to each item that it sells; a website's owner may be tempted to use the title of the page to list multiple distinct features about a product alongside the formal title of the product itself.

Even though each feature would effectively be a keyword that also appears throughout the descriptive text in the content, the title would make the entire website come across to viewers and potential customers as far from professional.

Since using the title purely to name the product in question without including any accompanying keywords for the sake of context would be harmful to the website's SEO needs, it makes the most sense for shopping websites to simply follow the product's title with a term describing what kind of product it is. A product page selling the S9 model of the Samsung Galaxy phone line, for example, should have a title along the lines of "Samsung Galaxy S9 Phone."

Other critical pieces of information about the product such as whether it includes a touchscreen function can be safely left to the prose that makes up the content itself.
