Google's Methods and Metrics Still a Mystery to Website Owners

When Google first parses a website or one of its newest pages, that URL gets awarded a set of SERP rankings quite quickly so that it can get a baseline amount of traffic that would make continuing to support its content and SEO more financially feasible for its owner. Once Google has recorded a URL and the content occupying it, Google usually checks back on that URL and its accompanying site no less frequently than every few days, and any content that has been added or updated on those pages will be recorded so that Google may grant updated rankings at a later date.

Nevertheless, an instance of Google performing a crawl on a website does not necessarily conclude with a full update to its rankings right then and there. It appears that smaller edits and additions to indexed pages of content are likelier to influence their rankings in short order, but any ranking shifts will only occur in small proportions. Larger changes that are likely to make a critical difference in a page's perceived authority value will instead take many weeks of Google applying its concealed algorithmic processes on the new content before Google enacts appropriate shifts in ranking.

The fact that Google's metrics have to be hidden from the public to avoid exploits and an influx of overly mechanical web design across the Internet leads to the public having to speculate on what would cause a website's indexing to be updated less frequently. This, along with what would make a difference in the time it takes for new and changed content to result in a meaningful SEO swing, may be influenced by whether Google considers it a high-authority resource to begin with.

One can logically expect Google to repeatedly crawl the websites of companies that are household names because any updates from them are important for society at large to pay attention to. Smaller companies operating locally, however, may have their SERP positions updated more occasionally than their competition for factors as arbitrary as their respective industries and whether their websites adhere to quality UX and UI standards.
