The adage about television commercials airing during the Super Bowl being better than the game itself came true for the 53rd edition of this sporting event. With just one touchdown and three field goals between both New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, the overly defensive game was not very exciting to watch either from home or at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta; the commercials, however, showed that major brands still believe in the power of TV advertising. One commercial of particular interest among search engine optimization professionals was presented by Wix.com, the website hosting giant that has emerged as a major competitor against the like of GoDaddy.com, a brand that is known for risqué Super Bowl commercials. Wix.com recruited gorgeous American model Karlie Kloss to show viewers how easy is to use the service for the purpose of creating and maintaining websites; however, at the 25-second mark, Kloss mentions the SEO Wiz tool, which ostensibly manages to grab the top search results. The outlandish claim made by Wix.com on its otherwise factual Super Bowl commercial did not go unnoticed by the SEO community. The problem with promoting SEO tools in such unrealistic manners is that they create a potential of misguiding business owners as to what SEO actually entails. There is also the fact that Wix.com used to have an uneasy relationship with SEO when it made extensive use of Flash, which Google could not easily index, not to mention the numerous security issues that eventually resulted in the shelving of this technology. Wix.com has improved considerably over the years, but its "SEO Wiz" tool barely competes with established WordPress plugins such as Yoast SEO. There's also the fact that online marketing professionals have determined that the SEO advice provided by Wix.com is not very helpful; too much emphasis is given to design and layout without going into content, alt text, tagging, structured data, local business placement, and other signals that Google has acknowledged paying attention to. In the end, GoDaddy's infamous Super Bowl commercials, while trashy and sexist, at least did not try to paint SEO as something that can be easily accomplished on a DIY basis.
