Google Has Rules for the Use of Headers on Pages
A website designer and SEO marketing specialist wanted to know if it is a good idea to just put one h1 header on a page in order to maximize SEO. This person said that their friend told them that one h1 header per page is ideal because it allows the search engine crawlers to have a better gauge of what that page is about for ranking purposes. This person is a beginner, so they stated that they have a lot of questions that might seem basic to more experienced SEO marketing professionals.
One person wrote back and stated that most search engine crawlers operate on general guidelines that include one h1 header. The person explained in more detail that having more than one h1 header could confuse the crawler about the context of the page's content. This person also said that the page's title is what the crawler considers to be the header.
Another person wrote back and disagreed with what the first person had to say. This second person said that it does not matter how many h1 headers are on a page because the Google crawler will only evaluate the first one. They did agree with the statement that more than one h1 header could confuse a site visitor. Another person agreed with the second person about the idea that more than one h1 header can be used on a page, but the headers should not be inserted with the idea of over optimizing, because that strategy will not work.
A different person replied and said that pages should be created like newspaper articles. One big header, and there can be smaller section headers in order to differentiate the supporting points of the text. Another person said that headers should nest within the page. For example, an h2 header should not be listed before an h1 header. There should only be one h1 header on the page, but there can be two or more h2 headers. After inserting h2 headers in the content, a site can have one or more h3 headers in order to add more differentiation.
