Google Creates Filter for Medical and Financial Websites Based on Credibility
In August 2018, a Google update, dubbed the Your Money or Your Life, had a negative effect on many personal finance, diet, health and medical websites, including e-commerce websites selling medical devices. The search engine wanted to reward websites that with expert advice and that were trustworthy, leaving ones that didn't to fall in the SERPs. Understandably, Google didn't want websites offering questionable financial or medical advice from in the top positions. Websites promoting unhealthy fad diets, dangerous medical advice and dubious investments have no place on the first page of Google's search results. Accreditations, awards and membership in medical or financial professional organizations are an important factor in judging the formal expertise of the website's publisher or author. Google may depend on a site's reputation, which comes from reviews, forum discussions, an article about the website in mainstream online media and Wikipedia entries, to judge its trustworthiness. Contact information is also a trust indicator. A website offering an investment opportunity should have multiple ways to reach the company, including a phone number, physical address and an email address. Low quality medical and financial websites have seen their rating tank. Google assumes sites with poorly written content, rife with spelling and grammar errors, as low quality. Medical content with claims not backed up with cited sources is also low quality. Google believes that webpages should benefit users. Pages created solely to sell medical devices or stocks without regard as to the effectiveness of these products deserve a lower ranking. While people shouldn't believe everything they read online, bad medical of financial advice can have a negative impact on them. A person following the advice of a website dispensing poor fashion guidance wouldn't have such negative consequences. If you have a medical or financial website, list all of your professional qualifications, professional memberships and certifications. You can't have too much expertise for Google.
